Meditation isn’t about being empty
It’s about being honest...
It’s not about stopping all your thoughts...
It’s about noticing them without getting lost in them...
If you’ve ever said, “I can’t meditate,” try this instead:
-
Breathe in for four, hold for four, out for four
That’s meditation -
Sit in silence with your hand on your chest
That’s meditation -
Walk and repeat a grounding word like peace or enough
That’s meditation -
Write down your thoughts without editing them
That’s meditation -
Stare out the window for five minutes with no music or phone
Still counts
If it helps you slow down, come home to yourself, and notice your thoughts without judgment, that is meditation.
Why our minds resist stillness
-
Your nervous system may be stuck in survival mode
-
Quiet time may feel unsafe if chaos was your baseline
-
You were raised in environments that praised productivity, not peace
-
You’ve never been told that rest is allowed
You don’t need to silence your mind to access stillness
You just need to be willing to start again each time your thoughts wander
That practice alone is the meditation
Therapy helps with this too
-
Reframing stillness as safety instead of discomfort
-
Exploring the emotional barriers to rest
-
Introducing body-based mindfulness for trauma survivors
-
Finding rituals that feel natural and not forced
You don’t have to meditate perfectly...
You just have to keep coming back to yourself...
Even if it’s for a minute...
Even if it’s messy...
Even if your thoughts are loud...
You can still access peace...
Therapy isn’t about being fixed. It’s about being found.
